Meshtastic vs Satellite Messengers

Satellite messengers (Garmin inReach, SPOT, Somewear, etc.) and Meshtastic solve different problems. Understanding where each one excels helps you choose the right tool — or decide to carry both.

Where satellite messengers are better

  • Solo deep-backcountry trips. If you are alone and far from help, a satellite messenger with SOS is the safer choice. Meshtastic requires at least two devices to work.
  • Global coverage. Satellite messengers work anywhere on Earth with sky visibility. Meshtastic only reaches other devices within a few kilometers.
  • Emergency rescue. The SOS button on a satellite messenger contacts professional rescue services. Meshtastic cannot do this.
  • Tracking for others. Satellite messengers can share your position with family back home via the internet. Meshtastic positions stay within the local mesh.

Where Meshtastic is better

  • Group coordination. For teams of 3-20 people working in the same area, Meshtastic provides real-time messaging and position sharing at no ongoing cost. Satellite messengers charge per message, making group communication expensive.
  • Cost. No subscription fees, low device cost. A team of 5 with Meshtastic devices costs less than one satellite messenger subscription for a year.
  • Frequency of communication. With Meshtastic, you can send as many messages as you want. Satellite messengers encourage minimal use because of per-message costs.
  • Local awareness. Meshtastic shows you where your team members are right now, updated every few minutes. Satellite messenger tracking intervals are typically 10 minutes to 1 hour.

Using both together

Many serious outdoor teams carry both:

  • Meshtastic for day-to-day group coordination, position sharing, and casual communication
  • Satellite messenger carried by the team leader for emergency SOS and for sharing the group's position with a base or family

This combination gives you the best of both worlds: free, frequent local communication plus a global emergency lifeline.

Recommendation

  • For groups working together in a defined area: Meshtastic is the better primary tool for coordination.
  • For solo trips or expeditions far from help: A satellite messenger is essential.
  • For safety-critical team operations: Consider carrying both.

Meshtastic and satellite messengers are not competitors — they cover different layers of communication. The right choice depends on your situation.
