Japanese Herbs

和ハーブ (wa-herb) are plants native to Japan that have been part of daily life for centuries. They appear in home cooking, traditional remedies, seasonal rituals, and natural skincare. Unlike Western herbal traditions, wa-herb knowledge is deeply tied to Japan's climate, landscape, and culture.

Japanese herbs

You may already know some of them without realizing it. Yomogi (mugwort) is the herb behind the green color of many Japanese sweets and is also used in warm baths. Shiso adds its unmistakable fresh flavor to salads, rice, and pickles. Dokudami, a common plant found growing along paths and in gardens, has been brewed into tea for generations.

These are just a few examples. Japan is home to a rich variety of herbs, many of them growing wild in forests, fields, and even along roadsides. Learning to recognize and use them opens up a whole new way of experiencing the Japanese seasons.

Our wa-herb guide holds a certification from the Japan Wa-Herb Association and enjoys sharing this knowledge with anyone who is curious. Whether you grew up in Japan or have just arrived, there is always something new to discover.

If you would like to see, touch, and taste these herbs for yourself, join one of our herb workshops. It is the best way to get started.
